Ms. Gómez Mendoza has a doctorate in Philosophy (Geography Section) from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (1974). She has been until 2012 Full Professor in Geography at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid where she was also Chancellor (1984-1985). She is now Emerite Professor. In 1997 she was nominated Honourable Engineer in Forestry. Since 2004 to 2013 she was Councillor on the State Council (elective). Gomez Mendoza participates also in Research Agencies Spain of Spain, France and the European Council for many years.


In her professional field she has been President of the Spanish Geographers Association (1993-1997) and of the Spanish Committee at the International Geographic Union. In 2003 she was elected full member of the Royal Academy of History (medal 7) and in 2005 of the Royal Academy of Engineering.


She has participated as head researcher in R+D projects and contracts, financed by public bid, amongst which the following can be highlighted: “The great territorial property of the province of Madrid”, “Geographical study of forests. Policy and management”; “Study on the historic presence of forest fires in Spain and the causes of these” and “Analysis of recent historic forest plantations” “Characterization and Identification of the Spanish Landscape” which led to the publication by the Environment Ministry of the “Atlas of the Landscapes” of Spain, as a line of works for the European Convention on Landscape.


Her lines of research are the regional geographic analysis – the history of geographic thinking in Europe and America – the history of the territorial ideas and policies in contemporary Spain, with particular attention to the hydraulic and forestry policies – periurban agriculture – Spanish natural and agricultural landscapes: inventory, analysis, management, city center and gentrification.


She has published numerous books such as “Agriculture and Urban Expansion”, in 1977 and “Science and the Policy of the Spanish Forests (1848-1936)” in 1992, “El pensamiento geográfico (1982 and 1988), “Repensar el Estado” (2013) and most research articles published in Spanish and international reviews.


She received the Palmes Académiques de la République Française (1985), the Gold Medal from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (2000) and the Alfonso X the Wise Great Cross of Civil Order. She has a doctorate “Honoris Causa” from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and from the Ecole Normale Supérieure of Lyon (France).
